Walk and Travel in Cumbria and Beyond

Heversham Head

Heversham Head

Had stuff to do today… lots.. but before I went for a walk at around 1, the only thing productive I managed to do was post parcels to the US and Oz.  Then I faffed around on my blog trying out new menus etc. and not really achieving very much at all.

Thankfully Friday walking friend Anne, also needed a break and we agreed to meet in Milnthorpe and walk ‘where ever’.  We have both come back to our roots and we just ‘set off’.  It was good not to have a map or backpack and just ‘know’ where we were, if not where we were going.

In the end we walked just over 5.5miles and had the most wonderful views of winter sunshine across the Kent and Bella Estuary.  I am pretty certain this walk will not be in any guide books.  We even managed to go past our primary school, we go back a long way.  Noticing the CCTV cameras on the entrance and a play area where we sat among rhododendron bushes at lunch time.  I realised, as well, that we used to see Red Squirrels among the trees at the back of the school.  Not sure if they are still there.

The ‘best bit’ was on reaching the trig point on top of Heversham Head where there is one of those South Lakeland ‘hidden gems’ and the that wonderful view of the Kent and Bella Estuary, soft and hazy in winter sunshine.

I am not sure which I prefer, the view from Heversham Head, which I know so well.  I used to walk up every lunch time when I was, supposedly, revising for my A levels, or being down in the estuary itself where you can smell the salt mash and appreciate the Lakeland Hills rising beyond.

  2. Looks like a stunning place!

    • Thank you. On the edge of the Lake District, but totally unknown.
