Walk and Travel in Cumbria and Beyond

Challenges

Challenges

Like many, I have been glued to the Olympics when ever I could be for the previous two weeks.  For one who really ‘wasn’t boffered’  before the show started I have been a total convert.  Celebrating the highs and shedding tears and the wonderful life stories we have heard from those who have achieved and some who have not reached their goals.  I have to admit that having my son working at Greenwhich park has made the vicarious pleasure even more special.

So, back to my own challenges!  This weekend I have had some wonderful friends to stay who are generally ‘up for anything’, but K was recovering from a knee injury so I had to try to plan walking which would show off the Lakes but not stress the knee too much.  I am not sure I really succeeded but I gave it a good shot and we have had two great days out, starting with Ullswater.

I figured that a ride from Glenridding would be a good start and it was utterly delightful, with blue sky and Chrystal clear reflections we took the first steamer from Glenridding to Pooley Bridge.  Note 10% discount on that first steamer at 9.45am

When explaining the, hum, gentle, hum 12 mile walk, I suggested we could take the steamer from Howtown if things proved too stressful for the offending joint.  What I honestly, no honestly, did not realise was that the first five miles from Pooley Bridge to Howtown are quite a gentle stroll compared to the undulating seven miles from Howtown to back to Glenridding!

Just a little hill, or two, or three…..

But it was, is, a great Lakeland day out.  The steamer followed by a Lakeside walk with images ranging from open fell to moss green woodland more used to rain than sun.  And we had the weather.  That soft reflection turning to dramatic cloud on reaching the lake end at Side Farm.  Mercifully the rain held off while we enjoyed a wonderful cup of tea and farm made cake!

More images of the walk here.  Info about the steamer and walk here.  Thanks to K and G for some of the photos.  And now I must go and watch that closing ceremony.  Well done GB!
