Walk and Travel in Cumbria and Beyond

York

York

A slight change from hiking hills this weekend.

I didn’t need much persuading to leave the Lakes behind,

just for a few days,

when the destination was the lovely old City of York.

Very much a reason to go north.

With a wall to walk,

Castle to climb,

Churches to admire,

There is a little exercise to be had.

Enclosed within its tight boundary the Minster appears from almost every angle.

Minster

Creeping round corners,

hovering over rooftops.

Even more splendid at night.

hymnbooks

Or inside.  Where the crypt is worth exploring and, sung by young voices, evensong worth stopping for.

Be prepared for waistline expansion.

No amount of wandering along walls or admiring ancient architecture will counteract the intake.

blackandwhite

Food and drink for every occasion.

Betty’s might equal my flapjack, but their breakfast exceeds and excels expectations.

Betty's cakes

Betty’s cakes

Three delicious meals a day and I ate enough for a month,

But with restaurants adorned with stars the temptation was too good to resist.

As well as Betty’s delicious meals at No 8, Gilligate and Star Inn the City
