Walk and Travel in Cumbria and Beyond

The Tedious Trio

The Tedious Trio

Grike, Crag Fell, Lank Rigg.  Three Wainwrights whose reputation had preceded them.

Not for being big.

Not for being difficult.

Just for being, wet, dull, uninspiring and a long way from any where.

Leaving them until almost the end of my quest was a mere accident of wind, rain and weather.  Not a plan.  Do I agree with their reputation?

Great Bourne from Grike

From Girke

They are fairly well off the beaten track.  Even from South Cumbria it took me nearly two hours to get there by a Birker Fell. Returning via Cockermouth and knocked a bit off the time.

Ennerdale

Wet.  Well yes it was.  An acned rash of green lines should alert anyone to a few delightful games of sphagnum hopscotch.

High they are not.  No ridges, no scrambles, just forestry tracks or broad green swathes of fell.  So  not inspiring but lets look at some plus points.

The early April day was clear so Grike and Great Crag,   provide a suitable viewing platform for more majestic hills.

And with the reputation they have, well you won’t meet many people.  The only person we met today was a Coast to Coast walker  (From Virginia USA).   For ex Coast to Coasters you will recognise the closing stages of your first days hike from St Bees. The fist hill, Dent, and the lovely Nanny Catch just across the valley.

Lank Rigg does not have a lot going for it,

Lankrigg

Though Iron Crag did looked an interesting ridge way up to Caw,

IronCrag

Iron Crag

and the bogs eventually club together in Whoap Beck.  Reflecting sunshine forgiving its sins as a purveyor of wet feet.

Calder

I fear I  need to find more positives.  Short easy walk?  Anyone add to my list?
