Walk and Travel in Cumbria and Beyond

One Way Ticket

One Way Ticket

Having just bought a one way ticket to Cambodia,

one way from Ambleside to Langdale was not all that drastic,

at least I could walk back.

There are several routes,

high, low and in between that link Dungeon Ghyll and Ambleside.  All on a clear day easy to follow.

My route, not very planned, was:

AmblesideRoute

I figured just to up on to the ridges, turn right, keep Grasmere and associated tarns

left and Langdale valley on the right and, with a wing and a prayer, I should end up in Ambleside.

Lingmoor

I did end up back in Ambleside without too much difficulty.  Blue summer skies making navigating by merely looking around eminently possible.

Pavey

Hard to know whether Pavey Ark looks most impressive from the bottom, right on it, or from Blea Rigg

LangdaleHills

The rest of the Langdales rolled away seaward.

Tarns

After the initial hike up Stickle Ghyll all is fairly flat and tarns are dotted among the cotton grass and squelchy sphagnum.

Fairfield

Tarn Crag and Fairfield

A slight debate with myself ensued when I dropped off Dow Bank and faced Loughrigg

With Ambleside on ‘t’other side’ should I go over,

done a lot or around it, may be further.

I opted for a right hand bend around Loughrigg with a pretty and fairly easy walk by the tarn and its orchids

The bus timetable can be found here.  Even runs on Sundays in the summer.   My walk back was just over 9 miles.
